Golf Limerick: I Despise When I Don't Hit the Ball First

Beginning golfers tend to struggle with the concept of the hit down -- after all, if you want the ball to go up, why would you hit down on it?  Especially, if you have an over-the-top downswing, hitting down often means hitting the ground behind the ball, not in front of the ball.  The guy in this poem has friends who give him a hard time when he serves up another chunked shot...

I despise when I don't hit the ball first.
And, instead, gouge the ground -- it's the worst.
My buddies all laugh,
I want to break my clubs in half,
But I just shake my head with my lips pursed.
